If you want a good history of the origins of Valentine’s Day,
you’ll want to have a full cup of coffee while settling into your most comfortable
chair. But, if you want to brief history, read on. You can also just skip down

With that said, here is a super-abbreviated history of one
of the several stories about Valentine’s Day. Remember, this short version only
hits the tops of the waves.
It starts with a man in the early Catholic Church, named Valentine. February has long been associated as the month of romance, dating back to Roman
traditions. So it goes, during the month of February, a priest named Valentine defied Emperor Claudius II of Rome
when he continued to marry young soldiers to their sweethearts, which was against one of Claudius II
edicts, that soldiers remain unmarried. Unfortunately for Valentine, Claudius didn’t take too kindly to his
disobedience, and he was beheaded. Historians put the date of his fate around 270 AD. The exact date of Sainthood is thought to have been around 500 AD.
Pope Gelasius I is credited with establishing the feast of St. Valentine on February
14, 496 AD.
There are several other accounts,
so who really knows. Through the centuries, the ominous beginnings and fateful ending of St. Valentine are in the dustbin of history. Now, we celebrate the love between people, from school children exchanging cut-off red hearts, to what we do today - give gifts. And, we are happy to call the occasion Valentine's Day.
