Whether you ride a Harley, or your sweetest ride is a golf cart, we all have something in common. We all have Mothers. No matter your relationship with your Mom, they still gave you the gift of birth. The custom through the years has grown to the way we celebrate it today, with gifts and/or a Mother’s Day card. Like it or not, that’s the way it is in our society nowadays. While the history of honoring Mothers dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who celebrated the goddesses Rhea and Cybele, their history is a tangled mess, and differs depending on the historical citation. As early as the 1st Century AD, Rhea-Cybele were memorialize in a Greco-Roman statue, shown below. Fact is, it’s goes back a lot further, but who really knows.
Suffice to say, that’s history. What we do today if more important. We honor mothers, all of them, be they friends, relatives, or our own Mom. How we do it is personal. Sometimes, it a dining event when the entire family gets together. If proximity is an issue, we resort to cards, a phone call, and gifts. And, if the particular Mom is a motorcyclist, we get resourceful and give a gift celebrating that hobby. While Harley-Davidson® says the best gift is going for a ride with Mom, they also mention that the next best thing is giving her a gift “that’ll make her think of you every time she puts it on.”
