Summer Riding Locations

Now that the summer solstice is upon us, if you’re looking for some great motorcycle rides, here is a short list of the most popular, according to the sources I used. This list is just a starting point for you. The destinations show the basic location, and a brief description.

Beartooth Highway – covers Yellowstone National Park and is unforgettable. Some riders say it is a must-do because it is challenging.

Blue Ridge Parkway – in North Carolina. Riders say it is relaxing, slow-paced with stunning vistas. It’s nearly 500 miles, running through Virginia and North Carolina. You’ll be in the Great Smoky Mountains. A famous portion is the section named Skyline Drive.

Going-to-the-Sun Road – Glacier National Park in Montana. Winding rivers, towering mountains. Breath taking.

Grand Staircase – Escalante National – in Utah. The landscape is beautiful, and not far from Glen Canyon National Recreation area. If you in the southwest USA, this should be on your list.

California State Route 1 – Big Sur Coast Highway. A rugged coastal road that has everything – beautiful coastal vistas and the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Needles Highway – South Dakota. If you’re going to the Sturgis Rally, this is a must. The granite formations are awesome. A short ride from Sturgis or Rapid City takes you by Mt. Rushmore, the Needles Highway, and Custer State Park.

Pig Trail Scenic Byway – The Ozarks of Arkansas. Sources say the byway has sharp curves and steep inclines, so be careful. It’s rustic, and seems untouched. Beautiful.

Tail of the Dragon – and we’re back in North Carolina and Tennessee. Known for its curves and beauty.

Tunnel of Trees Road – Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The ride is awesome and you’ll feel like you’re riding through a tunnel. The route to look for is M-119. It’s on the northwest coastline, bordering Lake Michigan. While you’re in the area, a trip to the Upper Peninsula is worth it, especially if you like solitude and quiet.

Twisted Sisters – In Texas hill country. It starts in Medina , northwest of San Antonio, and heads west for 100 miles. Many say it is among the best, most challenging rides in Texas.

Take your pick. Have a fun summer, and remember to wear a helmet.
