What's this about? It's about a seminal date in all of human
history. On July 4, 1776, a new nation was born. It took courage and fortitude
for the members of the Second Continental Congress to make a Declaration of
Independence, thus establishing the United States of America. While fighting
for independence actually started in April, 1775 with the battles of Lexington
and Concord, it was on July 4, 1776 that a unanimous ratification of the
Declaration of Independence officially declared that the colonies were
"free and independent states." Making that a fact took another five
years, culminating with the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in October,
1781.
This is what the
holiday is all about. Over the years, we celebrate it with fireworks, picnics,
travel, family time, and with holiday sales in the retail market. Harley riders
